- Hello people. I decided that I would write this file before I go on my 3
- week break because I wouldn't want you all in tears missing what I've got to
- say. So here we go....
-
- When I wrote my last bit for Page Jan, I hadn't looked through Amiga Shopper
- 71. I know it was 4 months ago it was released, but there are lots of
- things in the issue that really bug me.
-
- The atitude in the magazine seems to be that because their magazine has
- closed down, the entire Amiga world is going to collapse in the next few
- days and there will be no programs ever released for the Amiga again, and it
- has no future at all.
-
- I know lots of readers will not have seen the mag, but there was a special
- feature on the end of the magazine, one of the main quotes in there is:
- "in a dream world, the Amiga will be brought up, revamped and bounce back...
- but this is the real world". Hmmmmnn, and the part that suprised me the
- most was a piece by John Kennedy, who has been in Amiga mags for years.
- I've never really liked his writing, but this is an extract from his bit:
- ---------------------
- "It's too late. The PC has caught up and passed the Amiga is terms of
- Graphics, sound and even the operating system (HA HA!!! - Dan). The future
- of digital TV means that the Amiga won't be powerful enough to cut it as a
- 'set top box' and the "Amiga compatible" computers are destined to be
- expensive folies.
-
- It was great while it lasted, but we're on the last lap now. I'll continue
- to write for Amiga magazines for as long as I can, but it's inevitable that
- I'll be concentrating more on the Internet and PC side of things as time
- progresses. It's time to move on
- ---------------------
-
- OK. It seems a bit like sour grapes to me, I mean things might be bad at
- the moment, but things are not that bad. Things are actually looking up a
- bit this year, with more serious stuff being done on the Amiga, with the
- take off of CD-ROMs etc. The PC is still a dreadful machine, and every one
- who doesn't use the machine (and there are millions of Amiga and mac owners
- in the UK alone) knows it. Even lots of people I know admit that Windows is
- crap, and a PC with a pentium chip is still very slow. There are things
- that could be done to the Amiga, but not all that much can be done to
- improve it, it is near perfect as far as I am concerned. The PC is the same
- as the Amiga on graphics terms if you expand an Amiga to the same spec as
- the PC is expanded to, and the sound on the Amiga can easily be upgraded to
- 16 bit sound, which is the best that the human ear can cope with. The PC
- may have caught up on graphics and sound, but not in the operating system.
- MS DOS and windows are complete crap programs that were brilliantly
- advertised. If this is the last lap then this lap has lasted for 3 years.
- The new Amiga's will not be expensive follies if they are advertised, that's
- all we need. If we eventually do get some one who really has a passion for
- the machine, and there are plenty of companies out there who are striving to
- get it, then we will see this.
-
- 90% of people who buy home computers don't give a rat's arse if the machine
- is Windows and MS-DOS compatible. If they go into their local computer shop
- and see an Amiga running, and see how good it is, and the sales reps say how
- good the machine is, show them a few games, let them use a bit of the
- internet on it, use a few programs, a look at a program like Wordworth 6,
- with an example print out to hand and they are guaranteed a sale. That is
- why the A500 and the A1200 have done so well, and have emerged to be the
- second most popular home computer ever (the speccy was number 1), and if you
- don't count the PC, the Amiga is the second most popular computer in the
- country, and that is a fact, more people have Amiga's than Macs.
-
- Digital TV is years away, and by years, that is AT LEAST 20 years, probably
- more like 25 before it takes over normal TV completely. The Amiga can make
- it to be a set top box with a few upgrades, and it will be good enough for
- at least the next 10 years.
-
- John has dissapointed me in his comments, and I believe that if he is going
- to the PC then it is probably for money reasons. But there is no need to
- put down the computer that has made him money for that past few years.
- There is still a chance for the machine.
-
- If all his predictions do come true, and I can only see it happening if
- it is not possible to sell the Amiga, or a dead end company like Escom buy
- it, but if a company who deserve it buy it then it will all be good (I
- hope). But if his predictions do come true and the PC is te future of the
- computer world, if that is the only way to go, then I don't want to be part
- of that future. If it goes that way then I'm pulling out of the computer
- world until something else comes along that is better. I have owned a
- computer since about 1983 when I got my Atari 400 (which I still have!). So
- you might see me in 10 years, completely left the computer scene. Possibly
- using my Amiga to surf the internet at home, and being forced to use a PC at
- work, but only using the PC because I HAVE to, not because I want to...
- that's the difference, by the way at work we have 15 Amigas and one PC
- what does that say?
